GBP Optimization

Audit a Google Business Profile, see what is costing it the most, and work through the fixes in order.

GBP Optimization grades a Google Business Profile against a list of checks and turns the result into a health score and a list of work. Use it to decide what to fix first on a listing, and to show a client how the listing is improving.

#Before you begin

  • You need a listing in DigitPeak. See Add a listing.
  • To run the audit or change its keywords, you need the Owner or Editor role. Only an Owner can share.
  • Some checks wait on another tool. Comparisons with competitors need a Map Rank Tracker scan. Website checks need a Website Audit. Directory checks read Listing Management. Until that tool has run, the check shows Run this first and the button that takes you there. A check uses the latest scan, Website Audit or directory record at the time of the run, so run the audit again after a new one.

#Run the audit

The audit runs only when someone asks for it. Opening the page shows the last run exactly as it was.

  1. Open GBP Optimization and click the listing.
  2. Click Re-run the audit at the top. On a listing nobody has run yet, the button reads Run the audit.
  3. Under Keywords it grades against, check the searches this listing should be found for. Type a keyword and press Enter to add one. Click a chip under Worth considering to add a suggestion.
  4. Under Repeat, choose how often it runs again: Manually, Daily, Weekly, Every 2 weeks, Monthly, by day of week or Monthly, by date, and a time. A listing starts on Every 2 weeks, on the day and at the time it was added.
  5. Click Run the audit.

The run carries on if you close the dialog. Running the audit uses no credits.

#When the audit runs

  • A new listing is graded once on its own, as soon as it is added.
  • Re-run the audit grades it again whenever you click it.
  • A schedule runs it at the time you set, in the time zone shown. Tick Paused to stop it without losing the setting. Monthly dates stop at 28.

Each run adds a reading to the Progress tab. A second run on the same day replaces that day's reading. DigitPeak keeps the last 180 readings.

Opening the page never adds a reading.

#Audit keywords

About half the checks need keywords: does the description use them, do reviews and posts mention them. Your Map Rank Tracker keywords join this list automatically. Remove any the audit should not grade against; a removed keyword stays out. A list holds up to 60 keywords.

If a listing has no keywords yet, the page asks for them once when you open it. Until the listing's first audit has run, the Overview shows Run your first audit. After that, it shows Choose keywords for as long as the list is empty.

#The health score

Health is a score out of 100. Each check that can be graded carries points by how much it matters:

WeightPoints
Critical4
High3
Medium2
Low1

A check that passes earns all its points. One that passes only in part earns half. One that fails earns none. The score is the share of points earned.

Some checks carry no points at all:

  • Anything Google did not return, anything waiting on another tool, and anything only visible when signed in to Google.
  • Every check filed under Recommendations.
  • A field that only has to exist, such as a phone number, once it is there. A missing one still fails at full weight.

The gauge is green at 90% or more, amber from 50% to 89%, and red below 50%. Under it, the change is measured against the reading from about 30 days earlier. Click Why this score? to see every check that lost points and how many. Click Your other listings to compare with the other audited listings in the project.

#Crucial, Improvements, Recommendations and Healthy

Every check sits in one of four bands:

  • Crucial: checks that fail. Fix these first.
  • Improvements: checks that pass only in part.
  • Recommendations: worth doing, but they never change the score.
  • Healthy: checks that pass. A check stays here for as long as it passes. If it breaks again, it goes back to its own band.

On each row, a word says what the check found this time:

WordMeaning
PassingThe check passed.
PartlyIt passed in part.
FailingIt failed.
Not knownGoogle returned nothing for it.
Run this firstAnother tool has to run before it can answer.
Check on GoogleOnly someone signed in to the Business Profile can see it.

#The tabs

#Overview

The health gauge, What the checks say (checks run, split by band), Reviews and replies over the last 12 months, the Crucial and Improvements counts with their trend, and the top six actions. Click How to fix on any row to open the check. Click View all issues for the full list.

#Issues

Every check, grouped by band. Search, filter by part of the profile or by band, and sort with Worst first, Heaviest first, By part of the profile or A to Z. Click a row to open it: What we found, Why it matters and How to fix it, with a table of the items behind it where there are any.

Each fix says where on Google to make the change.

Social profiles on your Google Business Profile passes when 5 of the 7 networks (Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, X, YouTube and Pinterest) are on your Google profile. On a connected listing, a link you add on Google shows as Linked the next day. On a listing that is not connected, click It's on my profile on the row once you have added one. The button shows only on a network that is Active in Listing Management. Click Undo to take it back.

#Actions

The same checks as a to-do list, with the same rows as Issues. Filter the list at the top:

  • To do: checks that failed or passed in part, failures first.
  • Recommendations: checks waiting on another tool or only visible on Google.
  • Done: checks that pass, and ones you marked done.
  • Dismissed: suggestions you hid. They still count in the score.

The bar also shows how many checks pass. Click a row to open the check, the same page Issues opens. Under the title it says how long the work takes.

On the check's page, click I have done this and add a note of what you did. For a check DigitPeak can grade, the check waits in Done marked Waiting for proof until an audit run finds it passing. For a check only visible on Google, your note is required and is the only record. Click Not done after all to take a claim back, Dismiss to hide a suggestion you do not want, or Restore to bring a dismissed one back. Viewers see the check but not these buttons.

#Statistics

The same results counted in cards: the score, where the points sit, parts of the profile, what the audit cannot see, replies, the businesses on your grid, reviews and listings. Switch between Tiles and Graphs. Click part of a graph to open the matching rows.

#Competitors

The businesses that appear beside yours on the same searches, from your map scans for the audit keywords. Columns: rating, reviews, Avg. Rank, Share of Voice, and your review gap. Click a column heading to sort. A note says how old each keyword's scan is.

#Progress

A chart of the readings runs have saved: Health, the band totals, total reviews, and any single check. Pick which readings to include from All readings.

#Report

Audit reports for this listing, to send to a client or a prospect. Each row shows when the report was made and its Health score.

  1. Click Create audit report. The report is made from the audit on the page. Making one uses no credits.
  2. Click a report in the list to open it. The left side has two tabs, Sections and Settings. The right side is a Preview of the report exactly as the link and the PDF show it.

If the list says Run the audit first., click Open the Overview, then click Create audit report again.

A report keeps what it was made with. Running the audit again, or a new map scan, does not change a report already made or shared.

There is no Save button. A switch, chip or tickbox saves when you click it. A typed box saves a moment after you stop typing, and the preview reloads.

SectionWhat it shows
InsightsShort lines worked out from the audit, such as how many reviews have a reply. Untick any you do not want in the report.
Insight from the teamYour own note to the client.
Next stepsWhat your team will do next.
HealthThe Health score, and under it how many checks sit in each band.
Checks to work onEvery check that did not pass, worst first, with what was found and how to fix it. Click the arrow beside a band to list its checks. Switch off a band, or a single check, to leave it out.
CompetitorsUp to five businesses beside yours on the map, with their rating, reviews, Avg. Rank and Share of Voice.
Map ranks from the first scanOff until you switch it on. Each keyword's first map scan, with its date. Click a keyword to leave its map out.

The report shows them in this order, from the top.

Under Settings are Explain each section, Logo, Map style, Powered by DigitPeak and Language, as on Reports.

In the list, PDF opens the report ready to save as a PDF, Link copies a share link, Stop sharing turns the link off, and Delete removes the report for good. A Viewer can open a report and download the PDF.

#Share and export

  • Share (Owner only) opens Share this listing, where you invite someone by email. They get their own sign-in and access to the whole project, not only this listing, once they accept. See People and roles.
  • Export as PDF opens your browser's print dialog for the page on screen. Choose "Save as PDF" there.
