Map Rank Tracker

Track where a listing ranks on Google Maps from every point of a grid around it, scan on demand or on a schedule, and compare scans over time.

The Map Rank Tracker asks Google Maps the same search from a grid of points around a listing and records where the listing ranks at each point. Google ranks local results by where the searcher is standing, so one business can be first on its own street and eleventh a kilometre away. Use the tracker to see how far a listing's reach extends, who beats it where, and whether that changes over time.

#Before you begin

  • You need a listing in DigitPeak. Each listing has one campaign in the tracker. See Add a listing.
  • Google must have given the listing a map position.
  • Scans cost credits from the listing's monthly allowance. See Credits.
  • To scan or change settings you need the Owner or Editor role. A Viewer sees every result without the buttons. See People and roles.

#The campaign list

Open Map Rank Tracker in the menu. The page lists Campaigns, one card per listing. Each card shows:

  • Avg. Rank and Share of Voice from the latest scan, with the change since the scan before it.
  • The rating, the address, when the last scan ran, the number of Pins (grid points) and the number of Keywords.
  • Scan campaign, which opens the scan dialog.

Use the search box to find a campaign by business name or address. Use Order to sort by date created, name, Avg. Rank or Share of Voice. A campaign that has never been scanned always sorts last.

Click a campaign's name to open it. The toolbar above the list also has Share and Export, which ask which campaign you mean when there is more than one.

#Set up a campaign

A campaign has four settings: its keywords, the grid size, the radius and the centre. Saving settings spends nothing.

SettingWhat you can choose
KeywordsUp to 50. Each is one search, up to 120 characters. Keywords are saved in lower case, and duplicates are dropped.
Grid3×3 (9 points), 5×5 (25 points) or 7×7 (49 points).
RadiusAny distance from 0.2 km to 50 km, from the centre to the edge of the grid. Shown in km or miles.
CentreThe listing's own position, unless you move it. It must stay within 50 km of the listing.

To change them all in one place:

  1. Open the campaign's gear menu and choose Edit.
  2. Add keywords in Added to campaign, or pick them from Worth considering.
  3. Choose the grid size and type the radius.
  4. Drag the middle pin on the map to move the grid, if the listing sits at the edge of the area it serves. Put the centre back on the business undoes the move.
  5. Set the schedule, if you want one. See Scan on a schedule.
  6. Click Save changes.

The page shows what a scan of these settings costs, both when you click the button and on the schedule, before you save.

A scan records the grid size, radius and centre it was taken with. Moving the centre later does not redraw older scans.

The pencil next to the keyword picker on the Heatmap tab opens Edit keywords directly. A keyword you add is measured on the next scan.

#Run a scan

  1. Click Scan campaign on the card, or at the top of an open campaign.
  2. Check the keywords (one per line), the Grid and the Radius.
  3. Read the cost line. It says how many credits the scan uses (grid points × keywords × 2) and roughly when it will be ready.
  4. Click Run scan. Save without scanning keeps the settings and spends nothing.

A progress bar counts the searches as they come back. You can click Carry on working and leave the page. The scan keeps running and saves itself when it is done.

Costs credits: the scan runs only if the listing has enough credits left this month for the whole grid. See When credits run out.

A scan you start with the button usually takes about a minute. A point still loading shows a blue spinner and fills in by itself.

A listing runs one scan at a time. If you click Scan campaign while another scan of that listing is running, including a scheduled one, you see "A scan is already running for this listing."

#Scan on a schedule

A schedule runs the scan without anybody clicking the button. Every campaign starts on Manually, which means nothing runs on its own.

  1. Click the pencil next to the scan date picker, or open Edit from the gear menu.
  2. Choose a pattern: Weekly, Every 2 weeks, Monthly, by day of week or Monthly, by date.
  3. Choose the day and the time. Minutes are 00, 15, 30 or 45. Monthly dates go up to the 28th.
  4. Click Apply, or Save changes on the Edit page.

The time is in the time zone shown beside it. The dialog shows the next run.

Pick a time inside business hours. Google's local results can differ while a business is closed.

To stop a schedule for a while without losing it, tick Paused. To turn it off, choose Manually.

#Read the results

An open campaign has three tabs. See Heatmap metrics for what every figure means.

#Heatmap

The grid on a map, one pin per point, for one keyword. Use the keyword picker to switch keyword and the scan date picker to look at an earlier scan. The picker lists every keyword the campaign has ever scanned.

The row of figures shows Avg. Rank, Share of Voice, Business Visibility, Area Difficulty and the four bands. Avg. Rank and Share of Voice carry a small trend line across scans.

Beside the map, Businesses here lists everyone Google returned on this grid. Click a business to redraw the pins with its positions, with a marker where its listing is. Click it again to go back to your own. Click a pin to see Results here: the list Google returned at that point.

#Competitors

For the same keyword: a Share of Voice list of the top ten businesses (your row is added if you are not among them), a map with a bubble at each business sized by its share, and a table of All competitors. The table shows each business's rating, reviews, a small heatmap, Avg. Rank and Share of Voice, with the change since the previous scan. Sort it by any column.

#Keywords

One card per keyword with its most recent Avg. Rank, Share of Voice and band figures. A keyword measured in an older scan, but not in the one on screen, says when it was last scanned. A keyword saved but never scanned reads Saved, not scanned yet. Click a card to open that keyword's heatmap.

#Change how the map looks

Use the map style picker to choose Grey map, Full colour map, Light map, Muted map or Dark map. Use + and − to zoom, and drag to move. Back to the listing returns the view to where it started. Style and zoom change the picture, never the measurement, and your browser remembers them.

#Compare two scans

On the Heatmap tab, Compare scans appears when the keyword on screen has been scanned at least twice.

  1. Click Compare scans.
  2. Pick the earlier scan under Compare with the scan of.
  3. Read the two maps side by side: the earlier scan on the left, the one on screen on the right, each with its figures.
  4. Click Export to PNG to save the comparison as an image.

To compare your listing with a competitor on the same scan, hover a row in the All competitors table and click Compare heatmaps. ← Previous and Next step through the competitors.

#Export

  • Export to PDF on the Heatmap tab or the Competitors tab builds a report for the keyword and scan on screen. Both reports carry the grid, the Share of Voice map and the competitor table. The Heatmap report leads with how your listing did.
  • Export to CSV on the Keywords tab downloads each keyword's figures.
  • The download button on the map saves the map alone as PNG or PDF, with or without the DigitPeak mark.
  • Export on the campaign list asks for a campaign, a keyword and a report type, and builds the PDF from that campaign's latest scan.

#Manage a campaign

The gear menu on a campaign card holds Edit, Rename and Delete.

  • Rename changes what the campaign is called in DigitPeak. It does not change the listing on Google. Leave the name empty to use the listing's own name again.
  • Share (the person icon, Owner only) invites people to the project. Access is held by the project, so anyone invited can see the rest of it too.

Cannot be undone: Delete removes the campaign and every scan stored with it. Only the project's Owner can delete a campaign, and you must type delete to confirm. The listing itself stays.

DigitPeak keeps the 30 most recent scans of each campaign.
