Rank Checker
Check where any business on Google Maps ranks for a keyword, point by point across the area around it, with a single 5×5 scan.
The Rank Checker runs a one-off map scan for any business on Google Maps, not only your own listings. You find the business, type a keyword, and see where it shows across a 5×5 grid around it. Use it to size up a prospect before a sales call, or to look at a competitor, without setting up a campaign.
#Before you begin
- You need at least one listing, in any of your projects. The Rank Checker spends the monthly credits of all your listings, pooled. See Pooled credits.
- The Rank Checker is at the top of the Maps menu, with or without a project picked. It shows the same checks whichever project is open, and everyone on your projects sees them.
- To run a check you need the Owner or Editor role on at least one of the projects. A Viewer sees the checks already made. See People and roles.
#Check a business
- Open Rank Checker in the menu.
- Click Check a business.
- Choose the Country.
- Under Business on Google Maps, type the business name and the town.
- Click Search Google Maps. Each search costs 4 credits.
- Click Choose beside the right business. Each result shows its category, address, rating, phone and website to help you tell look-alikes apart.
- Type the Keyword, as a customer would search for it.
- Pick the Area around the business: 1, 2, 5 or 10 km.
- Click Check rank · 50 credits.
The grid is centred on the business's own position on Google Maps.
If the name search returns the wrong business, use Advanced search to add a Street address, ZIP or postcode or Phone number.
Costs credits: every search costs 4 credits, including a search for words you have searched before. Back to search and searching again is another 4 credits.
#Read the map
A check usually takes about a minute. A point still loading shows a blue spinner.
When it is done, the page opens on the business you checked:
- Businesses found lists every business Google returned for the keyword anywhere on the grid, best average position first. The bar beside each name shows how much of the grid it appeared on. The number is its average position.
- The map shows the chosen business's position at each point, with a marker where its listing is. Click another business in the list to redraw the map with its positions. This costs nothing.
- The line under the map gives the chosen business's average position and how many points it was in the top three on.
- Click a pin to open Results here, the list Google returned at that point. Hover the i beside a business, here or in Businesses found, to see its rating, address, Avg. Rank, Share of Voice and how many points it was in the top 20 on, with a Show on Google Maps link.
Pins, colours and averages work exactly as they do in the Map Rank Tracker. An average above 20 shows as 20+. See Heatmap metrics.
Use the map style picker to change how the map looks. Export to PDF builds a report for the business on screen: its figures, the map and everyone else on the grid. The download button on the map saves the map alone as PNG or PDF, with or without the DigitPeak mark. Exporting costs nothing.
#The Rank Checker page
Each business you have checked has one card. All its checks sit under that card, one per keyword. A card shows:
- A ring with the business's Business Visibility from its latest check.
- Keywords: how many keywords it has been checked for.
- Avg. position: its average across the grid in the latest check.
- Difficulty: Low, Medium or High, from the latest check's Area Difficulty.
- One button per keyword, with that keyword's average position. Click it to open that keyword's map.
Open map opens the latest check. Use the search box to find a business by name, address or keyword. The chips filter by All, In progress, Done and Archived.
The ⋯ menu on a card holds:
- Rename: the name shown on the card. Leave it empty to use the business's own name.
- Archive: moves the card under Archived. Unarchive brings it back.
- Delete: removes the business and every check of it.

| Area | 1, 2, 5 or 10 km | 0.2 to 50 km |

A check is 25 searches at 2 credits each, the same rate as clicking Scan campaign in the Map Rank Tracker. See Pooled credits.
#Limits
- One scan at a time per account. This covers Rank Checker checks and Client Acquisition discoveries together, whoever on your team starts them. A second one is refused with "A scan is already running. It finishes in a minute or two."
- A check is a single reading. To see whether a business has moved, run a new check and compare. For regular tracking of your own listings, use the Map Rank Tracker.
- DigitPeak keeps the 300 most recent checks and discoveries in an account. Older ones are dropped. Deleting a project does not delete any.
